چکیده

The potential use of Sr/Ca and Ba/Ca ratios in fish otolith, as a complement to 87Sr/86Sr study movements Prochilodus lineatus, was evaluated the La Plata Basin (South America). Water were obtained from samples collected during high low water seasons at 42 sites across Basin. Elemental isotopic measured by MC-ICP-MS, ICP-MS ion chromatography, available literature. Fish caught six different with physiochemical features. Otolith core-to-edge profiles determined LA-ICP-MS, while otolith data set taken predictive classification rivers according Sr/Ca, (92.5%) higher than that based solely on (58%), reached 100% for several rivers. Unlike Ba/Ca, significant relationship (R2 = 0.94, p < 0.05) found between edge suggesting this could be an efficient movement indicator P. lineatus. ratio complemented information provided Sr isotopes it particularly useful northwest basin, where alone do not allow differentiating large

Hydrologic and geochemical controls on soluble benzene migration in sedimentary basins

The effects of groundwater flow and biodegradation on the long-distance migration of petroleum-derived benzene in oil-bearing sedimentary basins are evaluated. Using an idealized basin representation, a coupled groundwater flow and heat transfer model computes the hydraulic head, stream function, and temperature in the basin. A coupled mass transport model simulates water washing of benzene fro...

RAPID COMMUNICATION / COMMUNICATION RAPIDE Reconstructing the lives of fish using Sr isotopes in otoliths

For many species, understanding the processes underlying variation in life history strategies is limited by the difficulty of tracking individuals throughout their lives. Within the rapidly expanding field of otolith microchemistry, novel approaches are being combined with state-of-the-art analytical techniques to provide new and valuable information about the environmental history of fishes. H...

Early to middle Eocene history of the Arctic Ocean from Nd-Sr isotopes in fossil fish debris, Lomonosov Ridge

[1] Strontium and neodymium radiogenic isotope ratios in early to middle Eocene fossil fish debris (ichthyoliths) from Lomonosov Ridge (Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 302) help constrain water mass compositions in the Eocene Arctic Ocean between !55 and !45 Ma. The inferred paleodepositional setting was a shallow, offshore marine to marginal marine environment with limited connect...

Collective foraging in heterogeneous landscapes.

Animals foraging alone are hypothesized to optimize the encounter rates with resources through Lévy walks. However, the issue of how the interactions between multiple foragers influence their search efficiency is still not completely understood. To address this, we consider a model to study the optimal strategy for a group of foragers searching for targets distributed heterogeneously. In our mo...

Movements of Diadromous Fish in Large Unregulated Tropical Rivers Inferred from Geochemical Tracers

Patterns of migration and habitat use in diadromous fishes can be highly variable among individuals. Most investigations into diadromous movement patterns have been restricted to populations in regulated rivers, and little information exists for those in unregulated catchments. We quantified movements of migratory barramundi Lates calcarifer (Bloch) in two large unregulated rivers in northern A...
